Hi, I'm Alan Degener.
I earned a B.S. degree in Education with a Mathematics minor from Miami University. My first four years of teaching where in the early 90’s in the rural Inupiat Eskimo village of Koyuk, Alaska. As one of only two high school teachers I taught half of the school subjects (all math and science courses, accounting, PE, typing, technology) and was ski coach, volleyball coach, and student council advisor. The remainder of my career was spent in Juneau teaching math at the middle school and high school levels, and eventually migrating over to be a middle school STEM teacher. During my time in technology, I earned a Master’s in Education with STEM Focus from the University of Alaska, Southeast. I retired from education in 2016 to work full time with Standard for Success.
During my teaching career I was a major consumer and front runner in technology in the classroom. I was the first teacher in Juneau (and had to be close in all of the US) at putting grades online for students and parents to check. I won several awards and honors for my technology integration. Customer service is paramount as educators do not have time to wait days for a half-response to a support ticket. Interactions with the clients and building a program that works for them – that is the most favorable part of my job.
If I’m not behind a computer I am probably outside with my wife and our three boys, or at a swimming, soccer, or running to events for one of the boys. Alaska has much to offer and we partake generously in hiking, biking, boating, camping, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling. If you are ever in the need of a good story around a campfire, I have a few…
