The updated Graduation Pathways – which Indiana high school students graduating in 2023 and beyond will be required to follow – was designed to give Indiana students the necessary skills and experiences needed to help them be successful in their college careers, as well as their job search.

Now that the class of 2022 has graduated and received their diploma, the final ISTEP 10/End-of-Course Assessments will no longer be used as the graduation qualifying examination. The new transition from ISTEP to Graduation Pathways offers more flexible and individualized options for regular as well as nontraditional students. Graduation Pathways allows students to choose a path that is tailored more to their unique interests, abilities, and career goals upon graduation.

Here are the new Graduation Pathway requirements that will affect how a high school diploma is earned by the class of 2023.

2023 Graduation Pathway Requirements

  • Earn academic credits for a high school diploma.
  • Develop employability skills via work-based, project-based, or service-based learning experiences.
  • Complete post-secondary requirements including passing college-ready standards for ACT, SAT, ASVAB exams, earning an honors diploma, or completion of an apprenticeship/career-technical coursework.

With these new requirement changes for students to graduate, there are also major benefits that come with Graduation Pathways that students can reap.

Benefits of 2023 Graduation Pathways Changes

  • Customized Graduation Plans – Changing from a one-size-fits-all approach allows customization options that allow each student to choose the path that most reflects their career goals after graduation.
  • Local Flexibility – Schools as well as districts gain the flexibility to create courses and unique experiences that work with the priorities and needs of the local community.
  • Career Oriented – Designed to ensure students acquire the necessary skills needed to be successful in today’s job market and economy, there is a strong focus on academic, intellectual interests, and lifelong learning.
  • Individualize Options – To ensure all students are prepared to be successful after they receive their diploma, the skills gap is addressed, and higher expectations are established for all students. The new Graduation Pathways offer the perfect combination of options to meet the unique needs of every student.
